The association Villes et Villages où il fait bon vivre has published its 2026 ranking of French municipalities based on quality of life. In the Yvelines, several towns are among the top contenders on the national stage. This ranking, which evaluates 34,727 communes across mainland France, is based on 197 criteria spanning 11 key areas: quality of life, safety, healthcare access, mobility, and the environment.
To create this ranking of the cities in Yvelines, the association relies on nearly 900 indicators drawn from over 130 statistical sources. This year, the methodology has been refined to include new data: delays on the SNCF trains, tourist information, and long-distance buses are now taken into account. More than 60 datasets have been updated, particularly those related to air quality, a factor increasingly monitored by Île-de-France residents seeking a healthier living environment.
The Yvelines department features several of its communes among the top-ranked in the country. Versailles, renowned for its royal heritage and modern infrastructure, leads the department’s standings at 22nd place nationwide. Saint-Germain-en-Laye follows closely at 43rd, with Sartrouville ranking 77th and Poissy in 80th place. These towns benefit from efficient connections to Paris while providing a calmer, more peaceful setting than the capital itself.
This ranking highlights the diverse profiles of Yvelines’ urban dwellers. Maisons-Laffitte, famous for its historic castle and equestrian pursuits, charms residents and visitors alike with its lush greenery and well-designed riverside promenades. Rambouillet, a former presidential retreat, blends its rich forest heritage with a vibrant commercial scene. Montigny-le-Bretonneux, part of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines new town, draws people in with its top-tier sports facilities and bustling employment hubs.
Communities with fewer than 2,000 residents are classified into a special category. In the Yvelines department, Les Loges-en-Josas stands out in this group, ranking 64th statewide. This charming village, nestled between Versailles and the Saclay plateau, offers a preserved rural environment while remaining close to the urban employment hubs of Île-de-France.
Médan, immortalized by Émile Zola who lived there, still retains its typical Seine village charm with cobbled streets running alongside the river. Toussus-le-Noble is home to one of Île-de-France’s major light aircraft airfields. Gazeran, on the doorstep of the Rambouillet forest, draws nature enthusiasts with its hiking trails. These small communities focus on close proximity, essential services, and an active local scene to ensure a vibrant and welcoming community life.
The weighting of criteria is recalibrated annually based on a survey conducted with over 1,000 respondents. In 2026, quality of life once again tops the list of priorities (80%), ahead of safety (74%) and health (50%). This hierarchy highlights the growing concerns among the French regarding their daily well-being and access to essential services.
On the national stage, Biarritz holds onto its top spot as the best city to live in among France’s 500 municipalities. Annecy moves up one place to take second position, surpassing Angers, which now ranks third. The Basque seaside resort continues to charm residents with its pleasant climate, beautiful beaches, and relaxed lifestyle, while the Savoy capital captivates with its picturesque lakeside and mountain scenery.
