The organization Villes et Villages où il fait bon vivre has just revealed its 2026 ranking of towns in Île-de-France. Which cities in Val-de-Marne are most favored for their quality of life? Find out the latest rankings published this February 1st.

As every year, the rankings of the best places to live continue to attract the interest of Île-de-France residents. Published on February 1, 2026, in collaboration with Le JDD, this national survey highlights the municipalities that provide the best quality of life for their inhabitants. In the Val-de-Marne (94), several towns stand out prominently. A total of 197 criteria across 11 categories were assessed to evaluate the 34,727 communes across mainland France: living conditions, safety, environmental protection, health, shopping and services, transportation, education, sports and leisure, local finances and taxes, community support, and property attractiveness.

This recognition certainly didn’t come by chance. To compile the 2026 rankings, the organization carefully analyzed each region using a rigorous methodology. This year, new indicators were introduced, especially in the health sector, taking into account the availability of psychologists, specialized clinics for psychiatric conditions, and cancer treatment centers. Safety measures have also been expanded to include factors such as homicide and gun-related theft rates per 1,000 residents.

A survey of 1,024 adults representative of the French population over 18 years old shows that, for the French, quality of life, safety, and health are the top priorities for a good living environment. Transportation, shops, and services round out their list of key concerns. The cities in Val-de-Marne appear to be meeting these expectations effectively.

Which city tops the departmental rankings?

No surprises here — Nogent-sur-Marne has once again confirmed its dominance for the sixth consecutive year. The town ranks 41st nationwide and holds the top spot in Val-de-Marne. Situated along the Marne River and bordering the 12th arrondissement of Paris, this riverside community offers numerous advantages. Its connectivity is a key asset: the A-line of the RER links it to Nation in just 8 minutes. For those working in northern Paris, the RER E from Nogent-Le Perreux station provides direct access to Gare du Nord in 24 minutes. This excellent transportation network makes Nogent-sur-Marne particularly attractive to Parisian professionals seeking a balance between work and a comfortable residential environment.

In recent years, the local government has carried out significant development projects that are reshaping the town’s landscape. Around the RER A station, the city’s entrance has undergone a major transformation, with the construction of modern offices and residential buildings. The Cœur de Nogent project has taken over, featuring a new market with a food court and a brewery. The Pavillon Baltard, a historic city landmark, now fits into this urban renewal, blending heritage with contemporary design. For the municipality, this recognition "celebrates the ongoing effort to create a balanced living environment where nature and well-being are at the forefront."

The banks of the Marne boast numerous green spaces perfect for Sunday strolls, a feature increasingly valued by families. Enjoying this laid-back lifestyle just a few minutes from the capital, residents benefit from the advantages of living close to Paris without its drawbacks.

Which other cities in the Val-de-Marne area are making a name for themselves?

Créteil, the administrative seat of the department, ranks second among departmental cities and comes in at 67th nationwide. The city boasts key infrastructure such as the Henri-Mondor Hospital, the Créteil Soleil shopping center, and numerous schools and higher education institutions. Saint-Maur-des-Fossés rounds out the top three (75th nationally), known for its lush residential neighborhoods along the Marne River.

Maisons-Alfort (ranked 103rd) and Vincennes (104th) are neck and neck. Vincennes benefits from a prime location near Paris, with its medieval castle and wooded areas providing a lush green escape for residents. Vitry-sur-Seine (105th) is climbing the ranks thanks to its urban renewal projects and vibrant cultural scene, highlighted by the MAC VAL, the Val-de-Marne Museum of Contemporary Art.

Champigny-sur-Marne (122nd), Fontenay-sous-Bois (132nd), Alfortville (139th), and Cachan (141st) round out this departmental top 10. These towns stand out for their diverse range of services, high-quality schools, and excellent public transportation links.

How Do These Cities Capture the Love of Their Residents?

Beyond the numbers, these communities in Val-de-Marne are focusing on bold local initiatives. Investments in sports facilities, cultural spaces, and local businesses help foster a sense of community. Local markets, media centers, public pools, and theaters form the heartbeat of neighborhood life.

Public safety remains a top concern for residents, prompting local authorities to ramp up their CCTV networks and police patrols. Urban renewal projects are gradually reshaping neighborhoods, revamping housing and enhancing public spaces. At the same time, efforts to boost ecological sustainability are gaining momentum, with more bike lanes, expanded pedestrian zones, and new green areas all contributing to a greener, safer community.

For families, educational opportunities are a key factor. The department’s preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools all boast strong performances, while daycare centers and leisure facilities make life easier for working parents. Additionally, sports clubs and cultural associations offer a wide range of activities suitable for all ages.
