Heatwave in Paris: Arc de Triomphe trims its visiting hours in the coming days

France is once again sweltering under a heatwave this summer, with Paris expected to approach 40°C. The spell of hot weather runs from August 11 to 15, according to Météo France, and residents and buildings alike are finding it hard to cope with the extreme conditions.

In fact, several tourist sites have chosen to adjust their opening hours to cope with this heat wave. Confronted by the heat and its potential risks for visitors, staff and the artworks on display, Paris’s museums and monuments are changing their routines.

Early closures or full shutdowns: various venues have implemented special measures during this week of extreme heat. This is especially true of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

It towers over Place de l'Étoile, at the far end of the Champs-Élysées. This monument rich in history draws daily both tourists and locals, curious to discover the Arc and its flame, dedicated to the Unknown Soldier. On 12, 13 and 14 August 2026, however, the Arc de Triomphe will shorten its visiting hours.

The monument’s website notes a change to its opening hours, “Due to the extreme heat, the Arc de Triomphe will be closed on Wednesday 12, Thursday 13 and Friday 14 August from 2:30 p.m. (last entry 1:45 p.m.) to 7:30 p.m. The elevator is currently undergoing maintenance. Access to the terrace is only by stairs.”
