While the capital's inhabitants may pride themselves on being Parisians, the vast majority of them were not born in Paris, and the latter are becoming increasingly rare, according to a study by Insee.

But where have the Parisians born in Paris gone? In 2020, just under 30% of the city's inhabitants were native Parisians- that's 637,900 people out of a population of over 2 million, or more than two-thirds born outside the French capital. According to an Insee study published on Wednesday for the first time, this is due to"migratory flows to and from the capital", a city where many people congregate in less space than the rest of the country, and which has seen its inhabitants flee to the provinces in recent years.

This ground-breaking study of thegeographical origins of Parisians shows that non-native Parisians come from the provinces, often from the south of the Paris basin or western France, but also from the West Indies (29%), that a quarter were born abroad, and that one Parisian in seven comes from another département in the Paris region. According to Insee, there has been no major change in the structure of the Parisian population in 50 years, since in 1968, 35% of Parisians were born in Paris.

These statistics aren't all that surprising, given the capital's mixed population, and are quite typical: apart from Marseille, all other French cities have a similar native-born ratio. What's more, Paris is especially attractive to foreign-born people, especially the Japanese!
