It's the kind of announcement that makes stilettos clatter on fashion editorial floors ... After thirty-seven years at the helm of American Vogue, Anna Wintour is stepping down as editor-in-chief. The announcement, made at a staff meeting on Tuesday, marks the end of a historic era for the cult magazine she has led with a (very) firm hand since 1988.
Anna Wintour, an icon with mythical bangs and unbreakable dark glasses, remains firmly anchored to the Condé Nast empire. She remains Vogue 's global editorial director and the group's director of content. In other words, she continues to call the shots on the pages of GQ, Vanity Fair, Glamour... and Vogue, in all its international variations.
This change is part of a vast organizational makeover at Condé Nast. The group is now focusing on regional editorial managers, and is actively seeking the next head of Vogue US. To date, no names have been shortlisted.
It's the end of the road for the fashion papess at the helm of the American edition, which she has shaped for almost four decades. A new chapter begins for the world's most influential fashion magazine.
