On the night of Friday July 11 to Saturday July 12, a major fire engulfed the Wat Pho temple in Breux-Jouy.

Just as the Fête Nationale celebrations were getting underway over the weekend of Saturday July 12, Sunday July 13 and Monday July 14, a very different story was unfolding in Essonne. The Wat Pho temple in Breux-Jouy was partially destroyed by fire. Although no injuries or deaths were reported, the damage was mainly material.

"All the monks' rooms went up in smoke", explains a monk at the Wat Pho Buddhist temple (to our confrères in Le Parisien). Although no human casualties were caused by this major fire, it came very close, as the rooms of the fifteen Buddhist monks were completely destroyed. The fire broke out at 10pm (again according to Le Parisien), but was quickly contained by the fire department, who battled to extinguish it until around 3am. The meditation room and Buddha statue were spared, and the monks have been temporarily rehoused in chalets on the estate.

It was in this temple that the Lantern Festival and Songkhan were celebrated last year.
