The Orange and Sosh mobile network is back online after the national outage on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, felt in Paris, the Île-de-France region, and across France. The operator explains the cause of the incident.

Phones are coming back online. After nearly ten hours of a nationwide outage, the Orange and Sosh mobile network has been restored since the evening of Wednesday, October 21, 2026, in Paris, Île-de-France and across the country. Calls, texts and mobile data are back up, and the operator is finally offering an explanation for the disruption's origin.

On Thursday, October 22, digital life returns to normal for most of us. But one question lingers as people switch their smartphones back on: how could such a central network go dark in the middle of the day?

Has the Orange and Sosh network been restored?

Yes. Shortly after 9 p.m., Orange announced in a press release that calls, texts, and mobile services were back up for both individuals and businesses, reports franceinfo. The outage had started around 11:20 a.m., according to the hour-by-hour tracker from Selectra.

The operator said its technical teams will continue monitoring the network in the hours ahead to ensure stability and service quality. A few brief outages may still occur as things settle in.

What caused Orange's outage?

Orange pins the incident on a failure in equipment inside its mobile network core, but doesn’t name which one, according to France 3 Occitanie. To picture it, imagine the core as the central switchboard of a major railway station. It’s the part that identifies every subscriber, authorizes connections, and directs calls and data. When the switchboard fails, the antennas can still be up, but no train leaves.

Another theory is circulating. According to Numerama, cited by Selectra, Orange reportedly tried this Wednesday to shift a portion of its subscribers to a new core network dedicated to 5G+. The affected lines could no longer latch onto either the old system or the new one. The official version indeed points to the same core network, but the operator does not endorse this hypothesis. It remains, for now, an unconfirmed explanation.

How many customers were affected by the outage?

Orange has not issued a precise figure. The spike in outage reports on Downdetector, the platform that tracks digital outages, rose to nearly 12,000 submissions around 11:50 a.m., according to BFM Tech. A rough scale rather than an exact tally: the operator counts about 21.6 million mobile customers in France at the end of June, and not all subscribers affected by the outage bother to report it.

Sosh customers, who share the same infrastructure, were hit by the same outage. The 5G boxes, which rely on the mobile network for their connection, were also left without Internet, while fiber boxes generally held up, according to Clubic.

Is this Orange's first outage of the year?

No. This is Orange’s third nationwide mobile-network outage in 2026, according to comparison site Selectra. On January 30, the outage lasted about seven and a half hours. On June 29, another Orange and Sosh outage had already disrupted 4G, 5G and roaming. This rekindles questions about the resilience of a network that many professionals also rely on.

Can customers get compensation after an Orange outage?

On the morning of Thursday, October 22, no goodwill gesture had been announced, notes JeChange. The comparison site recalls that in July 2012, after a outage of a similar duration, Orange had offered its subscribers a day of free mobile service, though it wasn’t obliged to do so. The contract, however, does not provide for a refund for a ten-hour outage: the consumer code only requires the operator to spell out its compensation in its general terms and conditions.

That said, you can still file a complaint with the customer service team, by calling 3900 or through the customer area, as Tom's Guide explains. It’s best to back it up with concrete evidence: the start and end times of the outage, screenshots, missed appointments or errands. Tradespeople, freelancers and drivers who lost revenue will want to quantify their damages precisely.

Still no signal on your phone?

If your smartphone still shows "no service," the simplest fix is to toggle airplane mode on and off, or reboot the device to force a reconnect. For 5G routers, a quick restart usually re-establishes the connection. If the problem persists, the Orange Network status page lets you check the situation in your area, and the Orange France X account shares the latest updates. In an emergency, the 112 number remains reachable from a landline or from a nearby relative’s mobile on another operator.

With the network back online, it's time to roll out our plans: a chance to catch up on lost time with our ideas for weekend outings in Paris and Île-de-France.
