The Expiatory Chapel is exceptionally closing its doors this Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, 2026. The monument cites “security reasons”. This weekend, several museums, monuments and tourist sites have chosen to close their doors. The decision is most often linked to the labor action disrupting France this autumn.
For several weeks, high school and university students have been protesting and organizing school blockades. They are denouncing the lack of funding for the national education system, the dilapidated state of schools, the shortage of teachers and more. Their protest movement has since gained momentum and spread: many citizens and trade unions are criticizing the government for allowing public services to deteriorate and the cost of living to rise.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a large demonstration was held in Paris. The popular rally ended in violence, looting of businesses and property damage. A new demonstration is planned for Saturday, October 24, and the government fears further damage.
Thus, as a safety measure for workers and visitors, several monuments have decided to close to the public on the day of the demonstration. The Chapelle Expiatoire will therefore be closed to visitors this weekend. The monument will reopen to the public on October 28.
