A day and evening dedicated to science... On the occasion of the Nuit des Musées, the Musée Curie invites the curious to enjoy a variety of free events on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Located in Marie Curie's former living quarters, on the very spot where she studied and taught radioactivity over a century ago, the museum is offering a number of educational tours and family-friendly activities.
A leading figure in French and international science, Marie Curie and her husband Pierre are famous for their research into radiation. Marie Curie was awarded two Nobel Prizes: one in physics (1903), which she received with her husband, and the other in chemistry (1911). In tribute to her achievements and exceptional work, Marie Curie (and her husband Pierre) are buried in the Pantheon.
The Curie Museum: In the footsteps of Marie Curie and her family
At the heart of the Curie campus, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris near the Panthéon, lies the Musée Curie. Open from Wednesday to Saturday, this free place of memory and knowledge offers an insight into the history of radioactivity and its medical applications. [Read more]
The Musée Curie invites science enthusiasts and the curious of all kinds to discover the life and work of this extraordinary woman, particularly during this year's Nuit des Musées. We reveal the program below!
The Curie Museum is located on the ground floor of the historic Curie Laboratory at the Radium Institute—home to the physics and chemistry of radiation. This longstanding research center was led by Marie Curie, along with Frédéric Joliot-Curie and Irène Joliot-Curie, who served as its directors.
Step into the cinematic world of À travers Irène, a short film directed by Paul Tandonnet (15 minutes, 2022).
The film takes us back to 1917, at the height of World War I. It follows Irène Curie, the eldest daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, who is just 19 years old and working as a radiography nurse in a military hospital. An unexpected encounter challenges her perceptions of commitment, balancing ideals, duty, and personal doubts.
After the screening, a discussion will offer insights into the film’s behind-the-scenes creation, exploring the writer’s choices and directorial approach. It's an invitation to delve into the connections between fiction and history, how scientific figures are portrayed in cinema, and reflections on the Great War. An opportunity to consider the delicate balance between historical accuracy, scientific rigor, and artistic freedom.
This is a moment to discover, feel, and ponder the role of science in film!
