The Nuit des Musées is the unmissable event inviting us to rediscover museums, châteaux and cultural centers from a fresh perspective through a broad program of free late-night openings. The event stretches across Île-de-France, and this year the 22nd edition is slated for Saturday, May 23, 2026. And precisely for this edition, it’s a chance to head to the Yvelines to discover the program awaiting us at the domaine du Château de Versailles.
A visit to the Château de Versailles and its program
The Château de Versailles, its gardens and grounds, are a world heritage site. The official residence of the kings of France, the Château de Versailles holds the record as the largest château in the world, and of course the most visited in France. [Read more]
This emblem of royal power under Louis XIV, better known as the Sun King, embodies the pinnacle of 17th‑century French art and signals a turning point in the history of the French monarchy. Today, Versailles is not just a monument to France’s grandeur but a living testament to the ingenuity and sheer opulence of the ancien régime before the French Revolution.
Originally conceived as a modest hunting lodge for Louis XIII, the Château de Versailles was transformed and expanded under his son Louis XIV, who made it the political heart of France from 1682 until the Révolution française in 1789. Architect Louis Le Vau, landscape designer André Le Nôtre, and artist Charles Le Brun played pivotal roles in shaping Versailles, delivering a harmonious complex that exemplarily blends architecture, interior design, and landscaping.
The Versailles estate also includes the Petit and Grand Trianon, more intimate retreats designed to escape the rigid etiquette of court life. The Queen's Hamlet, built for Marie-Antoinette, is an idealized rustic village that let the queen and her guests indulge in a taste of country living.
Today, Versailles draws millions of visitors each year, eager to wander its opulent halls, stroll its immaculate gardens, and soak up its captivating history. The palace is not only a museum of French history but also a living venue, hosting concerts, operas, and fireworks that keep the château alive.
That's why any chance to visit for free should be seized. We plunge into the past, where every stone, every sculpture, and every garden tells a story of grandeur, decadence, and, ultimately, revolution.
