The Night of Museums is making a return this Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Paris. Why not take the opportunity to explore the École des Mines and its Mineralogy Museum? Here’s an intriguing lineup of activities to discover during the 22nd edition of this cultural event in the capital.

The Musée de Minéralogie des Mines Paris - PSL is home to a fascinating yet little-known heritage: the rocks and minerals that surround us! For Nuit des Musées 2025, this institution invites you to join us this Saturday, May 17, to discover its program!

The Musée de Minéralogie des Mines houses a large collection of minerals, which began as early as 1767, when Guettard and Monnet began inventorying the kingdom's mineral resources, leading to the work of Jars, Gensanne, Grignon and Schreiber. In 1778, Sage, a "distinguished" mineralogist, succeeded in having a public School of Mineralogy built, where he installed his collections in the grand salon. Today, the Musée de Minéralogie des Mines in Paris houses one of the world's largest and most impressive mineral collections, with unique pieces and rare, precious specimens.

Over 4,000 samples of minerals and rocks are displayed in historic showcases covering more than 1,000m², providing an overview of the earth's mineral composition and highlighting French rocks and minerals: in addition, the architecture of the monument makes for a beautiful visit. Since 2016, three showcases have been dedicated to gems from the French Crown Jewels, extracted from Empress Marie-Louise's finery.

    ### The Mineral Museum

For over two centuries, the mineral collections housed within the historic Hôtel de Vendôme have ranked among the most extensive and impressive worldwide. Featuring roughly 100,000 specimens, including 5,000 showcased behind glass displays—minerals, rocks, gemstones (including some from the Crown Jewels of France), and meteorites—the museum offers a breathtaking display along a 70-meter gallery, steeped in rich history and cultural significance.

    ### The Temporary Exhibition: "Codex on the Rocks"

Bringing together the wild spontaneity of urban art, the rebellious spirit of vandals, the timeless allure of minerals, and the prestige of a renowned institution — that’s the daring concept behind this new exhibition by street artist Codex Urbanus at the venerable Mines Paris - PSL. It’s an energetic cocktail composed of an exceptional collection of thousands of minerals, aerosol spray paint, and artistic craftsmanship, all set within a stunning Victorian backdrop. Wander through the showcases, explore a parallel journey of discovery, and be surprised by this unique fusion of art, fantasy, and geology. “Codex on the Rocks” is open to the public until June 27, 2026.

On the occasion of the European Night of Museums, artist Codex Urbanus will grace us with his presence. Exhibition booklets and tote bags will also be available for purchase on the night.
