Get ready to dance on the Place de la République in Paris this Wednesday, June 21, 2023! As always, this iconic spot in the 11th arrondissement is at the heart of the city's celebrations. On June 21, we’ll be celebrating the Music Festival, with a lineup of concerts and lively events that are free and open to everyone—perfect for the whole family.
As a reminder, the Music Day was established in 1982 by the Ministry of Culture. That year, the ministry's research department conducted a major survey on the cultural practices of the French population. The findings revealed that five million people, including one in two young individuals, played a musical instrument. Inspired by this, Jack Lang, Christian Dupavillon, an architect and scenographer, a member of his team, along with Maurice Fleuret, envisioned a large-scale public celebration aimed at giving all musicians a platform to express themselves and gain recognition. The inaugural Music Day was officially launched on June 21, 1982 – a date symbolically chosen to coincide with the summer solstice.
