If I tell you June 21, you answer? Fête de la musique, of course! Every year, this popular and festive event marks the start of summer, and encourages a host of budding musicians to take to the streets to play live music.
2025 is no exception. So, on Saturday June 21, 2025, Paris and the rest of the Île-de-France region will be packed with musical delights. From streets and squares to parks and gardens, bars and restaurants, churches and museums... there's something for everyone.
The first Fête de la Musique was launched in 1982 on the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry of Culture's studies and research department conducted a major survey of French cultural practices. It revealed that five million people, including one young person in two, play a musical instrument. So Jack Lang, architect and scenographer Christian Dupavillon, a member of his Cabinet, and Maurice Fleuret came up with the idea of a major popular event to enable all musicians to express themselves and make themselves known. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21 1982, the symbolic day of the summer solstice.
More than 40 years later, the Fête de la Musique will have you dancing and singing your heart out on June 21, 2025. If you're in the capital's 14th arrondissement, why not take advantage of the musical bonanza offered by Cité internationale universitaire de Paris? This year, the venue celebrates its 100th anniversary with a festive, immersive weekend. Among the highlights not to be missed? The Fête de la Musique celebration, of course, with a program of DJ sets, concerts by world music artists and live performances to be discovered on the park's great lawn.
