Sunday, June 21, 2026 will see the annual Fête de la Musique return. It’s the moment to sing at the top of your lungs, to dance, and to celebrate with the family! Whether you opt for a classical concert or a brass band, this year once again June 21 is all about music!
But what is the Fête de la Musique? A popular, free music celebration, the Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry's Studies and Research Service carried out a major survey of French cultural practices. It revealed that five million people, including one in two young people, play a musical instrument. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21, 1982, the symbolic midsummer date.
And the response was immediate: that year, countless musicians took to the streets, squares, kiosks, courtyards, gardens, stations, and squares to let their music be heard.
It was in 1985 that the Fête de la Musique began to go global, during the European Year of Music. By 2017, more than 120 countries worldwide were taking part in the Fête de la Musique!
