Hearts, Valentin Ranger, 2026
Hearts is a 3D animated feature paired with a musical performance by Inès Chérifi. A human society encounters a hybrid species and, through it, gives birth to a new ideal of mutation and balance.
Two colossal hearts anchor the film’s central imagery. Both witnesses and active forces, they observe the birth of this world and accompany the connections between the organisms that inhabit it. They symbolize the first caress, the original tenderness that seeds the longing for connection. They may recall childhood, the first maternal tenderness, but they also embody a search—where gentleness remains constant and balance underpins every relationship. The other characters are hybrid avatars inspired by microscopic life forms. Human, bacterial, viral, and fungal bodies mingle in a biomorphic, ornamental aesthetic. They have developed forms of ornamentation—symbols of their biological heritage. Adornments, decorations, and architectural ornamentation thus become ways to make visible this living secret.
The film poetically traces the dialogue between the body’s surface and its internal systems. On the surface of the skin, microbiome organisms converse with the body’s interior, its fluids and its equilibria. The meetings, circulations, and dances among the film’s characters become a visual translation of the microbiome’s movements and the biological exchanges that link organisms to one another.
This film offers a sensitive meditation on how our relationships shape our place in the world, and it questions the role of care given to others as a new aesthetic of future beauty—a shared beauty, experienced collectively.
The musical performance deconstructs a love song, a dialogue between electric violin, voice, and machines. It invites audiences to inhabit a sonic environment where love manifests as a shared vibration circulating between bodies, surfaces, and the invisible architectures of sound.
The sonic material is treated as a network of flows: acoustic, digital, almost chemical—comparable to the electrical and biological circulations that traverse a living organism. Voices, violin, and electronic textures embody acoustic life forms that coexist, interact, and transform one another. Sounds unfold in evolving sonic layers, seeking a balance between forces: acoustic and electronic, raw matter and transformed matter, fragility and intensity. Vibrations circulate continually through the space, forging a shared soundscape where interactions between frequencies and bodies produce a collective experience.
