A brief history
The principle of archery is toaimat a 122 cmtarget 70meters away. The aim is toplace thearrows asclose as possibleto the center to score points. Archery is one of the oldest sports in the history of mankind, developed as an instrument of hunting and warfare by the Hittites and Assyrians as early as 1200 BC. During the Renaissance, manyEuropean countries organizedarcherytournaments toencouragetheircitizens to acquiremilitary skills. It wasn't until 1931 that an international federation, World Archery, came into being.
In the handisport version, male and female athletes with physical disabilities can compete standing up or in a wheelchair. The W1category is reserved for athletes who shoot from a wheelchair and whose arms show a loss of muscle strength, coordination or range of motion. In the open category, archers can shoot in a wheelchair, standing and leaning on a stool, with a high limit of activity in their trunk and legs.
In the classification round, archers shoot 72 arrows in twelve six-arrow flights, at 50 or 70m, for 4 minutes per flight. At the end of this round, archers are placed in a table and compete in pairs, in direct elimination, over five flights of three arrows.
Archerymade its Olympicdebutat the 1900 Paris Games.Competed in 1904, 1908 and 1920, the discipline wassidelined for overfifty years, before making acomeback at the 1972 MunichGames. Para archery has been following in the footsteps of Paralympic history since its inception in Rome in 1960. Like many other Paralympic sports, it was initially used as a rehabilitation activity. Its competitive interest materialized with the birth of a high-level competitive discipline, as presented today at the Paralympic Games.
