Golf is one of the many sports contested at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Rules, history, records, athletes: here's everything you need to know before the international events.

During the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, spectators from all over the world will be able to watch the golf events. This competition will be held at Le Golf National, in Guyancourt, Yvelines. A prestigious course that has hosted numerous international competitions, such as the Ryder Cup. The events are scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024.

This will be golf's fifth appearance at the modern Olympic Games: for a long time, the sport was no longer considered an Olympic event. Golf has only appeared at the Olympics in 1900, 1904, 2016 and 2020.

Yet golf is an ancient and widely practiced sport around the world: traces of the game can be found as far back as the 13th century in the Netherlands, and fixed rules were laid down in Scotland in 1754. It was only in the 19th century that golf really took off, with the creation of private clubs and professional tournaments. For a long time, women were denied access to golf courses and clubs.

The sport was played outdoors, on purpose-built courses of nine or eighteen holes. TheOlympic event, on the other hand, is played over eighteen holes, according to the stroke-play formula: "The aim is to count the number of strokes a player must make to reach the end of the 18-hole course; the course must be played four times in four days. The player who, at the end of these four rounds, has played the fewest strokes wins the tournament. Individual events are held, with men and women competing in different categories. In 2024, there is no Paralympic counterpart.

During these four Olympic golf competitions, just over 200 athletes took part in the golf events, representing 42 countries. The USA sent the most athletes, with 89 players. They were followed by Romania (71), the Philippines (23) and France (13).

It's hardly surprising, then, that the USA has the most medals in this sport. They won 13 in all: 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze. In second place are Great Britain (3 medals), followed by Canada and South Korea (tied with one gold).

And what about France? Our French athletes did not have the opportunity to shine at the Olympic Games. However, they have not lost out on the international sporting scene, and have even done very well in recent competitions. We're counting in particular on Céline Boutier and Victor Perez to bring us back some fine medals.
