Directed by Walt Becker and penned by Jay Scherick and David Ronn, Clifford brings together Darby Camp, Jack Whitehall, and Russell Peters in a family comedy based on the beloved books by Norman Bridwell. Emily Elizabeth lives alone with her mother when she adopts a small red dog given to her by a mysterious magician. The next day, the animal grows to an enormous size, turning the young girl's daily life upside down. With the help of her uncle Casey, she tries to understand this phenomenon and keep Clifford safe in the city.
The trio finds themselves caught up in a series of adventures across New York, including chases, comical situations, and unexpected encounters. Their bond highlights the giant dog's tenderness and the attachment between Emily and Clifford, which is at the heart of the story.
The film is an adaptation of Norman Bridwell's books, created in 1963 and already adapted into an animated series. Jay Scherick and David Ronn, who also wrote the scripts for The Smurfs, developed a plot centered on the relationship between children and animals. Filming took place in New York to take advantage of the diversity of the neighborhoods and the contrast between the city and the giant dog. Walt Becker used a life-size puppet to guide the actors before adding digital effects. John Cleese plays a new character, Mr. Bridwell, in homage to the creator of the books.
The film offers an adventure suitable for ages 6 and up, based on humor, family values, and emotion. It is aimed at viewers who enjoy animal stories, heartwarming comedies, and stories for the whole family.
