In spite of its plot, La Chambre des Merveilles has a touching, heartfelt feel. The mother's struggle to save her son from the coma into which he has fallen is touching. All the more so as the journey she embarks upon makes no sense whatsoever. And if it doesn't actually save the young boy, it at least allows his mother to get to know him better and discover the interests they don't talk about.
Thelma then sets herself the crazy challenge of making young Louis'Bucket List. It's an opportunity for filmmaker Liza Azuelos to set up her camera just about anywhere in the world, and of course, only in heavenly places. It's a feast for the eyes, even if the staging is a little uninspired. On the other hand, Thelma's achievements are a little facile. Most of her son's "things to do before the end of the world" are deemed impossible, but she manages to do them in a matter of minutes, and it' s sometimes hard to believe the script's nudges.
Nevertheless, the film allows the viewer to travel, and above all, the self-sacrifice of this mother commands respect and should appeal to those who can identify with the character.
