After making her mark in Simone and Mon Crime, there's no stopping revelation Rebecca Marder. This Monday, December 11, the César nominee for Best Actress of the Year is back on TV in De Grandes Espérances, broadcast at 10:35 pm on Canal+. Nothing to do with Charles Dickens' novel, this is a political thriller.
In this feature film by Sylvain Desclous, Rebecca Marder plays Madeleine, a brilliant young woman preparing for the ENA oral exam. From a modest background, she is in a relationship with Antoine (played by Benjamin Lavernhe), also an aspiring politician. While on vacation in Corsica, they are attacked and Madeleine accidentally kills the man who wants to harm them, before fleeing with Antoine.
From that moment on, the careers of the two lovers took a huge hit. A few months later, both have found a job, one with an MP played by Emmanuelle Bercot, the other with the Minister of Labor. Two political adversaries. But the ghost of this secret poisons the lives of both.
Although it lacks staying power and suffers from a bit of a soft underbelly, De Grandes espérances deals with a subject as fascinating as it is poisonous: the place of lies, and how one can (or can't) live with such a secret. But above all, it's a real political thriller, with all that that implies: dirty tricks, petty arrangements and, as we shall see, lies. It's a diabolical, well-paced tale, which unfortunately takes off a little too late - it's not until the film's final minutes that it reveals its full scope and becomes truly impressive. Nevertheless, Rebecca Marder carries the film on her shoulders, confirming her great talent. There's no doubt that she'll be one of tomorrow's great actresses.
