The first film from an almost unknown auteur, Sébastien Vaniček, Vermines is a project that has been a mystery from its very first images. Yet it is the best horror film discovered in 2023. Its release on VOD for both purchase and rental is scheduled for April 25, 2024.
The film takes place in a tenement building, where residents are faced with an invasion of killer spiders. On the screenplay, we find the director alongside a rather well-known name, Florent Bernard, more often credited with comedy scripts(Jack Mimoun, La Flamme et Le Flambeau, Serge le Mytho, etc.). This is the first time the screenwriter has worked on a horror film. The cast includes Théo Christine, Finnegan Oldfield and, above all, comedian Jérôme Niel.
And even though the screenplay's comedy credentials are evident (Florent Bernard's style is widely recognized in the dialogue), Vermines remains the most terrifying film of the end of the year. If you're an arachnophobe, you'd better stay away, because this film will have no mercy on you or your nerves.
In this beautiful apartment building - a wonderful setting - Kaleb collects many exotic animals, and acquires a small venomous spider, which at first sight seems harmless, but eventually escapes from its box. Problem: this species is known to proliferate at breakneck speed, adapting its size to the surrounding danger. The building quickly becomes infested with giant bugs, whose speed will systematically startle you.
Kaleb and his friends will have to flee this blood-curdling nightmare, which has become a den of ultra-dangerous insects and the corpses of the building's inhabitants. Yes, the invasion scenes are absolutely horrifying. The style is reminiscent of Alien, or even The Last of Us, as the noise the spiders make is reminiscent of the video game's clackers. In short, this is a film that embraces its references and has digested them well to produce a unique work in the French horror landscape.
