Watching movies and series at home can quickly become very expensive. So to avoid spending too much on streaming platforms, we've put together a list of a dozen or so free platforms that are available right now, so you can discover a wide range of films and series without spending a penny. There are two types of free platforms: those offered by TV channels, and others.
This is undoubtedly the best free streaming platform on the market. As film buffs already know, Arte offers an impressive catalog of films and series from all over the world and all eras. But the Franco-German channel also offers its viewers a 100% free streaming platform. On offer are the channel's original creations (the series En Thérapie, for example, has been viewed several million times on Arte.tv), but above all the films and series broadcast on the channel - and there are a lot of them! The only drawback, common to all free platforms, is that programs are only available for a very limited period of time. It may be a week, it may be a month, but it's rarely more than that.
As with Arte, France Télévisions has decided to make its platform much more than a catalog of replays. And unlike the others, France.tv is much more editorialized. The films and series it features are not necessarily broadcast on television. They are often thematic playlists, or retrospectives, an opportunity to shape one's own culture on a given subject.
This is the latest free-to-air platform, with programs going online on January 8, 2024. When it opens, 15,000 hours of programs are available, including TF1 replays and programs produced by the channel, but not only. Numerous French and American films, TV movies and series are also available. It's not the most cutting-edge catalog, but it's mainstream enough, and includes cult films such as Gladiator and The Hobbit trilogy. For a free offer, TF1+'s catalog is the most extensive of any platform of its kind.
MK2 cinemas have their own magazine, Trois Couleurs, but also their own platform, MK2 Curiosity. Subscriptions are available for less than €3a month, but there is also a free version. The latter gives access to three programs a week, without subscription. The platform offers mainly heritage films, both short and feature-length, made by filmmakers who have made history.
These two platforms are unusual in that they are not video-on-demand, but television channels. They're still totally free, but you won't be able to choose any particular program, just follow the live feed. But don't worry, Pluto TV and Mango offer dozens of different streams, and for the former, some of them are very interesting (one of the streams offers continuous South Park episodes, 24 hours a day, perfect for fans)! For the latter, however, you'll need a Molotov.tv account, as it's only via this platform that you'll be able to access Mango.
Yes, you may be surprised to see the world's number 1 video host on the list, but it's a veritable treasure trove of films to discover for free. Between short films, home movies and feature films that have fallen into the public domain, or even been put online without authorization (but not always deleted by the algorithm), there are thousands of works to discover. For our part, we recommend the Korean Classic Film channel, which puts hundreds of Korean films in the public domain online, in HD and with subtitles.
Launched in 2018, stopped and then relaunched in 2023, Nicolas Winding Refn 's (the director of Drive) free platform brings us films unknown to everyone. The filmmaker buys the rights to these feature films, most of which date from the 1960s, and makes them available online free of charge. The choice is limited, but very eclectic, and we can assure you that what you see on ByNWR, you'll never see anywhere else! Which makes it a unique platform.
