The manga may have been a phenomenon when it was first published, but Slam Dunk had never been adapted for the big screen, unlike most of the genre's leading works(One Piece, Demon Slayer, Detective Conan, etc.). This is now the case with The First Slam Dunk, released in cinemas on July 26 and expected on DVD and VOD on May 1, 2024.
And, a rare feat, the film is directed by the manga's author himself, Takehiko Inoue. This feature-length film takes a fresh look at a crucial moment in the manga, the match against Sannoh Kogyo High School. Fans of the manga will be able to discover new facets of their favorite characters, as well as previously unpublished elements.
Shohoku's playmaker, Ryota Miyagi, always plays intelligently and at lightning speed, evading his opponents while keeping his cool. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had an older brother three years older. Following in the footsteps of the latter, a famous local player from an early age, Ryota also became hooked on basketball.
In his second year of high school, Ryota joined the Shohoku high school basketball team, along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi and Mitsui, and took part in the national inter-high school championship. Now they're about to take on the reigning champions, the players from Sannoh Kogyo High School.
