After 26 years of loyal service, Netflix is closing its doors. Rest assured, we're not talking about the streaming platform behind Wednesday, Squid Game or, more recently, One Piece, but the DVD rental service with which the Netflix company started out in 1997.
Surprising as it may seem with the rise of streaming, Netflix has continued to rent DVDs, delivered to homes in the USA, and still exists today. In 26 years, over 5.2 billion discs have been rented, but this will come to an end at the end of the month. From September 29, it will no longer be possible to rent films in physical format, and those who have not returned their discs by this date will not be charged and can keep them. A fitting farewell gift.
Launched in the early 2010s, the streaming platform is finally becoming Netflix's sole market, and the latter still has a bright future ahead of it, for despite the emergence of numerous competitors(Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, etc.), Netflix continues to be number 1 in terms of subscriber numbers. This number has risen to 238 million, following the recent billing of account shares.
