With Drive-Away Dolls, Ethan Coen goes solo, parting company for the first time with his sidekick brother, Joel, to direct a feature-length fiction film. Expected in cinemas on April 3, 2024, Drive-Away Dolls is a zany, light-hearted queer road movie .
1999. Jamie(Margaret Qualley) and her friend Marian(Geraldine Viswanathan) set out to transport a car from Philadelphia to Tallahassee. After an imbroglio concerning the vehicle, worthy of Le Corniaud (only here, no Youkounkoun hidden in the horn, but a suitcase with rather... unusual contents, hidden in the trunk), things turn sour. They're being chased by a gang of criminals who aren't very bright.
If the two lesbian heroines are particularly endearing, Jamie with her thick Texas accent and Marian on a quest for pleasure, the rest of the cast is just as polished, especially Jonah Hill's sister Beanie Feldstein as a spurned ex who doesn't see it that way.
As funny in content as it is creative in form, this unconventional road trip exudes the Coen attitude, even if there's only one behind the camera: neon colors, distorting counterplanes, rapid zooms and dezooms, pop transitions, cartoonish sound effects, galloping dialogue, all interspersed with psychedelic sequences set to Funkadelic, with an extra cameo from Miley Cyrus as a young hippie who's good with her hands.
And let's not forget the nods to Tarantino: a low-angle shot from the trunk of the car and the discovery of the contents of the suitcase - invisible, for a moment, to the viewer - at a diner, as in Pulp Fiction. A queer comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's good fun!
