In 1759, on the Isle de France, Massamba and Mati live under the yoke of slavery onEugène Larcenet's plantation. Massamba nurtures the hope that his daughter will one day be freed, while Mati dreams of escaping the hell of sugar cane. One night, determined to change her destiny, Mati escapes. To find her, Madame La Victoire, a famous slave hunter, is hired. Faced with this threat, Massamba also decides to escape, becoming a "marron", a fugitive who definitively breaks the chains of the colonial order.
