Directed by Nisha Ganatra and written by Jordan Weiss, Freaky Friday 2: Still in My Mother's Skin marks the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the sequel to the 2003 cult film. This family comedy produced by Disney, due for release in France on August 6, 2025, revisits the body-swapping concept, applying it to several generations. The film will be available to purchase on VOD on December 4, 2025, and to rent from December 18, 2025.

The plot picks up several years after the events of the first film. Anna, now an adult, is taking care of her daughter Harper and is about to welcome a stepdaughter into a blended family that is still in the process of being built. As mother and daughter try to find a balance between responsibilities, transmission, and new reference points, Tess and Anna realize that the strange phenomena they experienced in the past could reappear. Intergenerational relationships take center stage in this story, which questions parental roles and changes in the family unit.

This time, the story explores the consequences of social, academic, and professional pressures faced by younger generations. Through its comedic approach, the film plays on the identity confusion inherent in the concept of body swapping, while taking on a more contemporary tone. The return of the original duo is accompanied by a new cast led by Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, placing this sequel in a clear continuity while renewing the stakes.

The trailer for Freaky Friday 2: Still in My Mother's Skin

This sequel is part of a particularly popular franchise. The first film, directed by Mark Waters in 2003, was a huge success in France and internationally, becoming a benchmark for teen comedies in the early 2000s. The impetus for this new production came directly from Jamie Lee Curtis, who suggested to Disney that they reunite the iconic duo for a new project. The script revisits the body-swapping premise, but this time extends it to teenagers, offering a broader treatment of family identities and role reversals.

Filmmaker Nisha Ganatra, who made a name for herself with Late Night and Welcome to Chippendales, brings a direction that focuses on family dynamics and the musical dimension of the story. The production also reunites a significant portion of the original cast, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal, and Stephen Tobolowsky. The inclusion of the band Pink Slip, reunited for the occasion, is part of a nostalgic approach supported by specific musical work, including two original songs.

Our opinion on Freaky Friday 2: Still in My Mother's Shoes

A body swap, a Camaro, and a family curse in the air

Twenty years later, Freaky Friday is back, and it's a bit like finding your old Converse sneakers at the back of the closet: a little worn, but still iconic. Lindsay Lohan reprises her cult role as Anna, Jamie Lee Curtis delivers punchlines in her shrink's suit, and boom! The mother-daughter duo is back in action... version 2025.

Gone is the rebellious teenager, Anna is now the (completely overwhelmed) mother of Harper, played by Julia Butters(The Fabelmans), a mini-tornado who loves surfing and is allergic to authority. Between her career as a pop star manager, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (aka Devi in the Netflix series My First Times), and her unstable family life, Anna tries to stay on track. But everything goes freestyle the day she is summoned to the principal's office and meets Eric, akaManny Jacinto (Star Wars: The Acolyte), the (very cute) father of a stylish and sharp-tongued new student, Lily, a typical example of the new generation of high school bullies. It's love at first sight for the single parents, with plans for a quickie wedding... and major tension among the teenagers.

Then, when Madame Jen, a multi-talented psychic (life coach, barista, and fortune teller on her lunch break), arrives, the situation takes a mystical turn. One divination session, one incantation out of nowhere, and one earthquake later, and you get... an intergenerational family curse (V2): Harper wakes up in Anna's body and Lily in Tess's, the slightly overbearing grandmother.

At first, it's a little hard to figure out who's whose body and whose role has been reversed, but eventually the mechanics kick in, and the joyful chaos becomes enjoyable.

While some try to find a solution, others hatch a plan to ruin the wedding. Even if it means flirting with Jake, Anna's ex— Chad Michael Murray, true to form with his motorcycle, brooding gaze, and Chevrolet Camaro that smacks of a 2000s revival. The irony? Jake has a thing for women... of a certain age.

Each pretends to be the other, making a series of blunders, revelations, and hair mishaps, until everything—or almost everything—is back to normal.

Freaky Friday 2 doesn't claim to revolutionize the genre, but it ticks all the boxes of a feel-good chick flick: a pop palette, a sweet soundtrack, teenagers on the verge of an identity crisis, and a trio of actresses (Lohan, Curtis, and Butters) who are uninhibited and frankly endearing. The film lightly explores the dynamics of blended families, the roles we give ourselves (and those we forget to play), and reminds us that sometimes you have to walk in someone else's shoes to truly understand them.

Yes, it's a bit crazy. Yes,the humor is very American (read: sometimes a little heavy-handed). But it's hard to resist this tender and kitschy whirlwind, somewhere between fantasy comedy and gentle generational satire.
