Mel Gibson brings us Flight Risk, a fast-paced action thriller set in a small cargo plane. Written by Jared Rosenberg, the film follows Madelyn Harris (Michelle Dockery), a U.S. Marshal tasked with protecting Winston (Topher Grace), a talkative and sometimes annoying criminal who is called to testify against a mafia godfather. As the plane takes off, Daryl Booth, the pilot played by Mark Wahlberg, quickly reveals his malicious intentions: to prevent the witness from reaching his destination, at any cost.
Flight Risk will be released in theaters on January 22, 2025.
Synopsis: US Marshal Madelyn Harris (Michelle Dockery) is tasked with escorting Winston (Tropher Grace), a criminal and informant who is set to testify against a mafia godfather. During their plane journey, she quickly becomes suspicious of the pilot, Daryl Booth (Mark Wahlberg), who doesn't seem to be the man he claims to be...
The choice of a small cargo plane as the main setting reinforces the intensity of the closed environment. The confined, almost suffocating spaces are brilliantly exploited by Mel Gibson, who skillfully plays with the audience's expectations. On several occasions, he uses tight shots or strategic angles to deliberately hide Daryl Booth from the camera, making his off-screen actions even more disturbing. This staging choice keeps the audience on alert and allows Mark Wahlberg to surprise them at key moments, when danger arises unpredictably. Every corner of the plane thus becomes a potentially deadly place, heightening the tension of the story.
Mark Wahlberg shines as Daryl Booth, a villain who is both calculating and relentless. His magnetic performance keeps the film tense throughout. His determination to eliminate Winston and neutralize Madelyn makes him a formidable antagonist, worthy of the best thrillers.
Although the atmosphere is heavy, the film allows itself a few comic moments. The exchanges between Madelyn and the air traffic control employee who helps her manage the landing provide a welcome lightness. These touches of humor humanize the main character and offer an effective counterpoint to the gravity of the situation.
Despite immersive direction and solid performances, the plot suffers from its classicism. The story follows the well-known codes of the genre, with often predictable twists and turns. The character development remains superficial: while Madelyn's past is evoked to fuel her quest for redemption, Winston remains mainly a comic relief, without any real depth. The closed setting, however masterful it may be, fails to mask the limitations of an overly linear script.
The film's action aesthetic, while functional, lacks cinematic flair. The light cargo plane, despite its relevance to the closed setting, contributes to an overall impression of television aesthetics, which may disappoint those expecting a more visually ambitious work.
Flight Risk is a compact aerial thriller that relies on controlled tension and a striking performance by Mark Wahlberg as a formidable villain. Well-placed touches of humor and effective staging are enough to make it an honorable piece of entertainment, but the whole remains too predictable and limited to leave a lasting impression.
