I Love Peru is a comedy co-directed by Raphaël Quenard and Hugo David. The film stars Raphaël Quenard, Hugo David, Anaïde Rozam and José Garcia, with guest stars including Jean-Pascal Zadi, Michel Hazanavicius, Jonathan Cohen, Emmanuelle Devos, François Civil and Eric Judor. This singular feature blends autofiction, satire of the artistic milieu and Andean spirituality, in an improvised, hand-crafted project that blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality.
I Love Peru will be available to buy on VOD from November 6, 2025 and to rent from November 12, 2025.
Synopsis: In a frantic race for success, an eccentric comedian abandons his most loyal allies. Alone with himself, he is struck by a disturbing vision. He heads to Peru for a spiritual adventure.
I Love Peru is aimed at audiences interested in hybrid forms, between comedy, introspection and performance. The film could appeal to fans of free auteur cinema, misappropriated spiritual quests or tales of artist identity. The offbeat tone and improvised form recall Casey Affleck's I'm Still Here or Adieu les cons for its gentle madness and acid look at the system.
Born of an initial rejected project, I Love Peru was shot with a small crew, no heavy production, just a camera, a few microphones and a lot of resourcefulness. Around 200 hours of rushes were accumulated (including 10 hours in Peru), resulting in a film lasting just over an hour. Among the film's highlights was a real-life session with a Peruvian shaman in Lima, based on a false story invented by Quenard to fit in with the ritual. The result flirts with the borderline between fiction and reality.
The film is based on the relationship between Raphaël Quenard and Hugo David, who set up a flexible set-up: Hugo filmed everything, in a form of scripted making-of, where the interactions, sometimes improvised, provided the material for the story. Appearances by well-known actors such as Jean-Pascal Zadi, Jonathan Cohen, Marina Foïs, François Civil and Eric Judor are the result of real, spontaneous encounters captured on camera.
To promote the film at Cannes, the team paraded a life-size fake condor around the Croisette. This costume, worn by Hugo David's sister "for her kindness", symbolized both the spiritual dimension of the film and its absurdist humor. The condor became the film's unwitting totem, a perfect synthesis of its blend of sincerity and derision.
I Love Peru is an atypical auteur comedy, born of an aborted project and reinvented as an improvised adventure. Co-written and co-directed by Raphaël Quenard and Hugo David, the film explores the twists and turns of ego, success and contemporary spirituality in a flexible, funny and personal way. It is aimed at viewers in search of free narratives and non-standard forms, oscillating between introspection, absurdist humor and authentic encounters.
