Prime Video unveils the first images of Bloodaxe, a new historical series from Michael Hirst, the creator of Vikings, and his son Horatio Hirst. Comprising eight episodes, this Viking saga is slated for 2027, with no precise release date yet.
Bloodaxe traces the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, one of the Nordic warriors most famous in the medieval sagas. Played by Xavier Molyneux, he seeks to seize the Norwegian throne alongside his wife Gunnhild, nicknamed the Mother of Kings and portrayed by Jessica Madsen.
The opening scenes place the couple at the heart of a realm beset by rivalries, shifting alliances and betrayals. Their bid for power draws the gaze of Scandinavian kings and a formidable English ruler, hinting at a saga that will blend costly wars, dynastic schemes and family feuds.
The cast also includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen. Michael and Horatio Hirst jointly oversee the series’ writing, art direction and executive production.
Prime Video appears to be betting big on this universe: even before the first season airs, Bloodaxe has already been renewed for a Season 2, currently in production in Ireland. The first eight episodes will drop simultaneously in more than 240 countries and territories.
With this new sweeping epic focused on the power struggles of medieval Scandinavia, Michael Hirst returns to the historical ground that propelled Vikings to success. The French release date and an initial trailer are yet to be announced.
