Directed by David Yates and written by Steve Kloves based on the work of J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 is a fantasyadventure film starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Released in France on November 24, 2010, it is the first chapter of the saga's conclusion and will be broadcast on TF1 on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 9:10 p.m.
With Voldemort now in control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione leave school to carry out the mission entrusted to them by Dumbledore. The three friends must find the Horcruxes, fragments of the soul that are essential to the downfall of the Dark Lord. Their quest takes them far from familiar places and confronts them with increased dangers in a country now under the watchful eye of the Death Eaters.
Isolated, hunted, and unsure of what to do next, the three heroes must face the tensions arising from the constant threat hanging over them. Their journey reveals the trio's flaws, doubts, and nascent maturity, while hostile forces seek to prevent any progress toward Voldemort's destruction. The story focuses on urgency, secrecy, and the weight of secrets, in a darker and more adult atmosphere.
The feature film adapts the first half of the last novel, a decision made by the production team in order to convey all the dramatic stakes of the book. The film marks an aesthetic turning point with a more realistic style of filming, closer to documentary according to David Yates, to follow the journey of the three heroes outside Hogwarts. It is also the first installment of the saga in which the action takes place almost entirely outside the school.
Several iconic sequences required significant technical work, including the scenes where Harry is duplicated using Polyjuice Potion and the chase involving broomsticks, motorcycles, and Thestrals. The Tale of the Three Brothers was designed as an animation. Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans enrich the cast, while Ralph Fiennes reprises the role of Voldemort with a particularly memorable performance.
Filming was completed on June 12, 2010, for the last two installments, which were made simultaneously. Several distinctive artistic choices mark this production: a change of director of photography with the arrivalof Eduardo Serra, music entrusted to Alexandre Desplat, modifications to certain secondary roles, and new scenes designed to enhance the film's rhythm. Part of the filming took place at Leavesden Studios, the future site of the permanent exhibition dedicated to the saga. Sources: Warner Bros., French distributor, Leavesden Studios, TF1.
In terms of tone, the film is aimed at audiences aged 10 and up, with a darker atmosphere focused on danger, escape, and psychological tensions within the trio. The work is aimed at viewers who are fond of coming-of-age stories, fantasy worlds, and great cinematic sagas.
