In this third installment of the Night at the Museum saga, Larry Daley discovers that the magical tablet that brings the museum’s inhabitants to life is beginning to fade. To save his companions, he travels to London, to the British Museum, where the origin of the mystery may lie.

The film shifts the action from the American Museum of Natural History to the British Museum, introducing new characters while bringing back several familiar faces from the earlier installments. Ben Stiller reprises the role of Larry, alongside Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Dan Stevens and Ben Kingsley.

When it hit theaters, our review called the follow-up a bit more retreat than reinvention, leaning on familiar characters rather than genuinely expanding the universe. Now streaming on Netflix, we can revisit the saga’s final live-action chapter, notable for including one of Robin Williams’s last appearances on the big screen.

Our take on Night at the Museum: Secret of the Pharaohs

Like Peter Pan with the fairy, Larry, the world’s most famous museum guard (Ben Stiller), will try to save the magic of New York’s Natural History Museum—the very magic that brings its inhabitants to life each night—as they embark on a mission to the British Museum.

Introduced by a quick, fanciful flashback, the action is dispatched with neither grace nor inventiveness: as with many blockbuster sequels, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Pharaohs relies on its beloved characters to stitch together a series of sketches that lands with more indifference than laughter.

There is, however, a certain pang of emotion in seeing Robin Williams again and bidding farewell to the museum saga: buoyed by a dream cast (though increasingly uneasy with the task), Night at the Museum had its merits, now lost to time. A pity!

Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Pharaohs may appeal to Netflix subscribers looking for a family comedy that blends adventure, fantasy, and animated historical figures. The movie is aimed less at viewers hoping for a more inventive sequel or a standalone chapter outside the first two installments.
