It might seem just another luxury shop along the Champs-Élysées. Yet, at number 68 on the avenue, Guerlain also occupies a building listed as a Monument Historique. An often-overlooked detail that tells both the story of Parisian heritage and that of a brand that has become one of France’s most iconic symbols of luxury.
Founded in 1828 by Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, the boutique initially opened on Rue de Rivoli, but over the course of the 19th century, it established itself as a leading name in perfume making. With iconic creations, a prestigious clientele, and an air of refinement, Guerlain gradually became a symbol of a certain Parisian way of life. Its move to the Champs-Élysées, at the beginning of the 20th century, was no coincidence; it marked a new chapter in the brand’s rise, now positioned on one of the most iconic avenues in the capital.
The building was constructed between 1912 and 1914 for Jacques and Pierre Guerlain, and officially opened on August 2, 1914, just as Europe was plunging into war. Designed by Charles Frédéric Mewès, the architect renowned for his work on the Ritz hotels in Paris and London as well as the Carlton Hotel in London, the structure boasts a facade that combines stone, metal, and intricate decorative details. Its design perfectly embodies the refined elegance of the Belle Époque.
But the site's appeal goes far beyond its exterior appearance. Officially designated as a Historic Monument in 1991, the protection extends not only to the storefront on the ground floor but also to the mezzanine and the beauty institute on the first floor. This wasn't merely about preserving a façade, but rather safeguarding an entire world of its own.
This space was crafted with a distinctly Parisian flair for presentation: marble, mirrors, chandeliers, and a lavish display of perfumes... Later, the Institute Guerlain, opened in 1939, further cemented the location's prestige.
The Champs-Élysées store weaves together two stories: that of a modest monument in Parisian heritage, and that of a house founded in 1828 that has become a symbol of French luxury.
