Quills, inkwells, delicate papers and wax seals... L'Écritoire, a small family-run stationery shop tucked away in Passage Molière in Paris’s 3rd arrondissement, makes you really want to pick up a pen again!

Some people fire off a message in three seconds, while others still enjoy choosing their paper, taking out their finest pen and sealing an envelope. For the latter, L'Écritoire is a little slice of paradise! This Parisian stationery shop, founded in 1975, has spent fifty years cultivating a love of beautiful writing, quite literally.

Located at 26 passage Molière, in the 3rd arrondissement, right next to the Maison de la Poésie, the shop left its historic address on rue Saint-Martin in 2022. But its family spirit remains unchanged. It all began with Sofie, who took up the baton from her grandfather, a maker and wholesaler of school inkwells. Her daughter Valentine is now carrying on this lovely family story, with a keen eye for objects that make you want to write.

In this little shop, penholders and inkwells sit alongside sealing stamps, sticks of multicolored sealing wax, fountain pens, notebooks and writing paper. You’ll even find charming desk accessories, finely crafted scissors, embossed cards and envelopes that almost deserve to be displayed. Some items look as though they’ve come straight from an antique writing desk; others have a playful flair.

The wax seal section is well worth a look. Choose a design, melt the wax and add a delightfully old-fashioned touch to an invitation, announcement or personal letter. Calligraphy enthusiasts will also find plenty to love in the selection of nibs and inks, while the original cards make it easy to give someone a little something without breaking the bank.

The boutique favors handcrafted goods and small production runs, with a special focus on European creations. It’s the perfect place to find a thoughtful gift, rediscover the pleasure of writing by hand, or simply treat yourself to a lovely notebook. The only question is what to write on all those beautiful pages!
