Ingmar Bergman's Fragments of an Autumn Sonata at Funambule Montmartre

A silent piano, two women locked in a room, and the tension of a face-to-face encounter after seven years of silence... From September 4 to 28, 2025, Le Funambule Montmartre plays host to Fragments d'une Sonate d'Automne, an adaptation ofIngmar Bergman 's play directed by Valérie Drouot. A theatrical proposition from the Kaamos company, which aims to explore the brutality of human relationships in a pared-down form, where music, words and silences compose an intimate, vertiginous score. Reduced to two characters, Eva and Charlotte, this version focuses all its dramatic intensity on the confrontation between a daughter and her mother, around their grudges, their wounds and their memories.

The plot unfolds after seven years of separation between Eva and Charlotte. Their meeting resurrects grudges and passions in an oppressive in camera setting where every word seems to open a breach. In this adaptation, Valérie Drouot questions intimate truths, repressed emotions and the subjectivity of memories. The play becomes the terrain of a verbal and psychological battle between two women who share neither the same memory nor the same truth.

A theater for spectators eager for psychological confrontation

This adaptation is aimed at audiences who enjoy psychological theater and great verbal confrontations, as well as those curious to rediscover Bergman in an uncluttered form. It will appeal to those interested in complex family relationships, psychoanalysis and the place of women in society and in intimate history. On the other hand, it will not appeal to audiences in search of light-heartedness, humorous entertainment or spectacular staging, as the production remains deliberately tightly focused, concentrating on the intensity of the dialogue and the simplicity of the stage.

Music, omnipresent in the original play - Charlotte is a concert pianist, Eva an enlightened amateur - is used here as a leitmotif, translating the characters' obsessions and impulses. The set design moves away from realism to create an atmosphere where space and time are distorted according to the intensity of the story. This choice places the focus on words, confrontation and the respective positions of each of the characters in relation to the world.

A tight cast and an experienced director

The cast includes Juliette Lambot as Charlotte and Cristina Figari as Eva. Valérie Drouot directs the show, a return to the theater after a rich career combining multidisciplinary artistic training, vocal coaching and accompaniment of renowned actors and singers.
