Le Cid pète un câble is a tragicomedy by Caroline Vigneaux, freely adapted from Pierre Corneille's classic work. Presented at the Théâtre des Mathurins from January 15 to March 6, 2026, this creation revisits the founding text of French theater to make it accessible to a wide audience, from teenagers to adults, by combining classical art and contemporary culture.
The idea for this adaptation came from Caroline Vigneaux's personal experience of struggling to convey the joys of classical theater to her children. This reflection gave rise to the desire to rewrite a timeless work in lively, direct language, while retaining the original text's alexandrine structure. The result is a bridge between literary heritage and today's language.
In this version, Le Cid becomes a modern play in which Rodrigue and Chimène face the dilemmas of love, honor, and family, revisited with humor and clarity. The show retains the original plot while adding elements of dance, music, and comedy to appeal to a generation that is connected but sometimes distant from classical theater.
Directed by Caroline Vigneaux herself, the play brings together four young actors: Marie Bucher, Marion De Schrooder, Albin Duvert, and Florian Schwob. Together, they breathe new life into this major work, exploring its universal themes with freshness and pedagogy. This project is part of a desire to democratize theater and show that the texts in the repertoire can still speak to today's audiences.
Le Cid Pète un Câble is set to take the stage at the Théâtre des Mathurins from January 15 to March 7, 2026.
