A century after her death, Sarah Bernhardt is in the spotlight: the Petit Palais is organizing an exceptional exhibition, from April 14 to August 27, 2023.
This retrospective exhibition brings to life the life and exceptional career of this multi-talented artist, through more than 400 works. Stage costumes, photographs, paintings, posters, props... Each element tells a story, an encounter of this " sacred monster ". The exhibition also highlights lesser-known aspects of Sarah Bernhardt's life, revealing her creations in painting, sculpture, and literature.
Sarah Bernhardt brought to life the works of Racine, Victor Hugo, Shakespeare, Edmond Rostand, Molière, Marivaux, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas... She played the iconic characters of the theater on all the greatest stages of the world. She frequented manyartists' circles and became friends with Gustave Doré, Louise Abbéma, Alphonse Mucha, Sacha Guitry... Her talent and her physical appearance, recognizable among all, made her a star adored by all.
The exhibition at the Petit Palais also focuses on the more intimate life of the actress, her tastes and her way of being, which made her an eccentric and very independent woman.
The Divine, as she was called, is revealed through this rich and colorful journey, which combines costumes, paintings, sculptures, photographs and personal objects. Each work tells a story from the colourful life of this actress. Multimedia devices allow us to discover the voice of Sarah Bernhardt, the voice that contributed to her fame and legend.
