He is one of the great American artists of the 20th century. More than twenty years after his last retrospective in France, it was time to pay tribute to him once again, and introduce new generations to his art. Mark Rothko is the star of the exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, from October 18, 2023 to April 2, 2024.
This retrospective features 115 paintings. The chronological exhibition takes us from the painter's earliest figurative works to his last abstract paintings. These creations come from various collections, from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, to the private works of the Rothko family, via the Tate in London, to give us an overview of the artist's entire career.
The exhibition begins in the 1930s: the various paintings show us a tragic, lonely world, a New York marked by the atrocities of the First World War. It was after the Second World War that Mark Rothko turned to abstraction. The painter's art and techniques changed dramatically.
At first, the artist plays with color, mass and geometric shapes, assembling them in a fragile balance. Gradually, these shapes disappear, leaving only color. In these paintings, the rectangles oppose each other, their colors speaking to each other, complimenting or confronting each other. The artist often expresses herself in reds, ochres, oranges, yellows... Some compositions play with blues, whites or blacks. These seemingly simplistic works conceal a secret language, a silent dialogue that the painter wishes to conduct with the viewer...
Among the masterpieces not to be missed in this exhibition is a series of nine paintings, all exhibited together. These works were commissioned by the Four Seasons to decorate the famous restaurant. Mark Rothko created the paintings... Then refused to give them to the restaurant. These works are exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in a separate room, as is the Rothko Room, an art room designed by the painter for the Phillips Collection.
