Their name was well known in the artistic Montmartre of the 1860s to 1930s: Auguste and Eugène Delâtre, printers and engravers, made a name for themselves with their now iconic prints, and their landscapes of fascinating light. Father and son are revealed in the exhibition Un siècle d'impression(s), presented at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Paul Éluard, from September 15 to December 11, 2023.
The museum brings back to life the famous studio on rue Lepic, where many artists of the period met. Édouard Manet, Jean-François Millet, Mary Cassatt, Camille Corot and many others came here to print their prints and chat with their colleagues. However, the Delatres were not content to simply print the works of others: they too took up engraving, drawing inspiration from the scenes and landscapes around them.
Several hundred works, donated to the museum by the Delâtre descendants, are on display. Among these engravings, etchings and prints are creations that have never before been shown to the public!
The exhibition route traces the careers and skills of Auguste and Eugène Delâtre, from their printing workshop to their engravings. But that's not all! Through the works, we discover a forgotten Montmartre, the Montmartre of artists and free spirits. We can see the changes in the city, the current events, the ever-evolving interests of these artists who tell the story of the world they see bubbling up.
As the year draws to a close, the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Paul Éluard offers us a lovely artistic and historical tour, full of nostalgia and unsuspected masterpieces. See it now!
