In 1948, T'ang Haywen arrived in Paris to study medicine. His plans soon took a turn for the worse: the student had fallen in love with art, and would remain in France for the rest of his life. The Musée Guimet recounts the life and work of this influential painter, in a retrospective exhibition on view from March 6 to June 17, 2024.
Entitled T'ang Haywen, un peintre chinois à Paris, this exhibition brings together some one hundred works that retrace the different chapters in the artist's career. From early watercolors to abstract landscapes, diptychs, portraits, studies and postcards... The exhibition provides an overview of this artist's work, which blends Western modernity with Asian tradition.
T'ang Haywen arrives in post-war Paris, where the art scene is undergoing a renaissance. His sketchbooks recount his wanderings through Paris, from museum aisles to the streets of Montparnasse. Highly inspired by Western art, T'ang Haywen also remains attached to his native culture, blending past and present, East and West in his work. This marriage of cultures has made T'ang Haywen a leading artist on the Chinese and international contemporary art scene.
Theexhibition looks back at the major painters who influenced the Chinese artist, the evolution in the use of color or monochrome, the adoption of the diptych, the gradual mastery of gesture and technique... We also discover more original and intimate creations, never before shown to the public.
Come and discover the works of contemporary artist T'ang Haywen and his evolution in this tribute exhibition organized by the Musée Guimet, a wonderful opportunity to delve into the different stages of his career and his quest for the ideal painting, whether visible or imaginary.
