At every age, depending on who's around us and where we are, we take on different masks and attitudes. The artists atEspace Monte-Cristo explore these personality changes, these multiple identities, through colorful and surprising works to be discovered from April 19 to December 14, 2025.
The free exhibition A Thousand and One Lives brings together over thirty sculptures that illustrate the different images hidden within a single individual. The intimate and the social, the natural and the constructed, the unique and the universal: everything mixes and collides. French and international contemporary artists give shape to these multiple beings, in original and poetic ways.
Espace Monte-Cristo showcases works by Prune Nourry, Nick Cave, Sophie Lavaux, Kiki Smith, Stephan Balkenhol and many others, in an introspective journey that prompts visitors to question their own identity, and what prompts us to adopt different faces.
Without judgment, without imperative, this exhibition calls into question the way we construct ourselves, the societies and groups that participate in the formation of our identities, the gender frameworks and cultural origins that weigh on us. Can we shed an awkward envelope and blossom, like a butterfly? Are we made up of thousands of beliefs and memories? What role does our culture, our country, our religion play in our identity? There are no ready-made answers here: everyone can see the message they want in the works presented.
Each work offers us a new idea, prompting us to redefine ourselves and assess the impact of the world around us on our inner world. Some sculptures are funny, colorful, childlike. Others are disturbing. The artists on show know how to surprise us, again and again, with their skills and their creations.
Belonging to a group or being an individual, being complete or divided: this exhibition is always on the edge, between worlds. With their sculptures, contemporary artists reveal the full range of possibilities, helping us to reconstruct our identity piece by piece. Discover it for free at Espace Monte-Cristo in 2025!
