The Théâtre municipal de Fontainebleau, not to be confused with the Théâtre Impérial du Château de Fontainebleau in the Seine-et-Marne region, is one of the finest examples of Italian-style theater in the Paris region. Inaugurated in 1912, this Louis XIII-style building, listed as a historic monument, continues to fascinate with its architecture and rich programming.
Built from 1905 onwards by architects Fernand Lucas and Paul Marion, the theater stands a stone's throw from the Château de Fontainebleau. Its stone and brick facade, bordered by an elegant raised terrace, already sets the tone: monumental and refined.
Inside, the hall and its huge reception room host events and temporary exhibitions.
The 475-seat theater impresses with its sumptuous décor. A trompe-l'œil painted dome, a metal lantern and a gilded stage frame crowned with the town's coat of arms combine to recreate the magic of the great European theaters.
For more than a century, this venue has seen the likes of Jean Marais, Sylvie Vartan, Johnny Hallyday and many others pass through its doors. Today, it remains at the heart of Fontainebleau's cultural life. One of the highlights is the Jazz au Théâtre Festival, held every November, which attracts music lovers with a line-up of renowned artists linked to the famous Django Reinhardt Festival.
For the 2024-2025 season, the Théâtre Municipal de Fontainebleau offers an eclectic program, including plays, concerts and dance performances. Here are a few events not to be missed:
The theater is also a meeting place and cultural identity for the town of Fontainebleau, hosting a variety of artistic disciplines throughout the year. Its bar is open before every show, offering drinks and light snacks from 7pm.
Located at 6 rue Denecourt, in the immediate vicinity of the Château de Fontainebleau, the theater is easily accessible and a must-see for art and history lovers. Tickets for shows can be booked online via the official box office. In short, the Théâtre Municipal de Fontainebleau offers a rich cultural experience in an exceptional historical setting, reflecting the diversity and richness of Fontainebleau's heritage.
