Since its origins in the 12th century,Grimbergen Abbey has cultivated a brewing know-how deeply rooted in monastic tradition. Over the centuries, despite wars, fires and successive reconstructions, the monks have always preserved and passed on their knowledge, in order to renew themselves.
Today, this heritage takes on a new dimension with the resumption of brewing within the abbey itself, for the first time in over two centuries. The new microbrewery, located in the heart of the abbey, draws its inspiration from the library's ancient manuscripts, while using contemporary brewing techniques. Under the impetus of Father Karel, who has been trained in brewing, and master brewer Marc-Antoine Sochon, this union of tradition and modernity gives rise to original brews, produced in limited series.
These brews are marketed under the name "1128". Grimbergen brews, meanwhile, remain brewed in Obernai, France, with recipes approved by the Abbey fathers.
The Grimbergen brewery's creations reflect a genuine focus on aromas, textures and taste profiles. Each recipe is conceived as a reinterpretation of the past with a touch of innovation. The aim: to perpetuate the heritage of generations of monks while appropriating modern techniques. In this way, Grimbergen has established itself as a fully-fledged player on the contemporary brewing scene, faithful to its history and resolutely focused on innovation.
