A few historical milestones

Built in the 13th century, Château de Méridon was first used as a royal wildlife reserve and later became the hunting stronghold of the highest members of the French aristocracy.

From the 1900s onwards, under the ownership of the Marquis de Breteuil, the Château had a variety of tenants, starting with Henry White, the American ambassador to France who signed the Treaty of Versailles (1918). Château de Méridon became an emblem of the Vallée de Chevreuse thanks to Lady Sullivan, a wealthy American who made the château, and in particular its gardens, her own.

She hosted sumptuous dinners and parties for family, friends and members of American high society. After the Second World War, the Château was bought by the Dutch government, which used it as a residence for its nationals wishing to settle in France.
