American director James Gray may once again have gone home empty-handed from the Cannes Film Festival.Armageddon Time, the drama he presented in the official competition , was a great success. The film, starring Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Strong and Jessica Chastain, is scheduled for release on November 9, 2022.
James Gray is a regular at the Croisette. He presented The Yards in 2000, La nuit nous appartient in 2007, Two Lovers in 2008 and The Immigrant in 2013. In 2022, with Armageddon Time, he presents a film inspired by his own youth in New York.
Our review
This is a highly subtle film. Under the guise of a lovely family story about his childhood, James Gray examines American society and attempts to explain the origins of its current shortcomings. By telling the story of this child, he manages to evoke racism, exclusion, the struggle between different social classes and the rise to power of the Trump family.
The filmmaker achieves this without making an outrageously political statement; it's all in the subtext and in the moving words of the character played by Anthony Hopkins, who plays a most touching role. In fact, this is a real actor's film, with each of Armageddon Time's very talented actors performing remarkably well. At the Cannes Film Festival, seeing this film leave without an award came as a shock to festival-goers.
In the mid-1980s, the Queens district of New York is under the hegemony of real estate developer Fred Trump, father of Donald Trump, the future president of the United States. A teenager studies at the Kew-Forest School, where Trump's father sits on the school board and Donald Trump is an alumnus.
