Medicine and its story are given pride of place… On the occasion of European Heritage Days 2019, the National Academy of Medicine in Paris opens its doors for free on Saturday September 21, 2019. An entire day to discover this Art Nouveau hotel built by APHP architect Julien Richet and the mission to service of everyone’s health.
Instead of being a museum, the place is yet filled with an oh-so precious heritage. A visit during these European Heritage Days will allow visitors to discover the “signature of the Salle des Séances, its cupola housing the monumental statue of Hippocrates as well as displayed master pieces, paintings about the history of medicine, marble and bronze busts of famous doctors”.
Visitors can also discover “one of the richest medicine libraries in the world” featuring 400,000 volumes including 13 early-printed books (books printed in Europe before 1501) during a document presentation that covers etchings to radiographies. Documents of uncommon formats will be particularly put forward: from a few inches to over one meter high, these works are illustrated according to particular techniques (engravings on wood, engravings on leather, lithography, and so on).
A day during which visitors can discover the place as groups, accompanied and guided by an academician. A privileged tour to be completed with your family or friends, to know everything about the story of the Parisian medicine… Shall we go there, friends?
