The Opéra Comique was created under the reign of Louis XVI, in 1714 by Catherine Baron – who was the first director – and Gautier de Saint-Edme, two members of a carny company rejected by the Comédie-Française and the Académie Royale de Musique (current Opéra Garnier). A company that did more into pantomime and opera parody. It is in 1714 too that the company is authorized to have its own theater, but on the condition that spoken dialogs should be inserted between songs. Today, the authorized repertoire got bigger and extended to baroque music and contemporary music.
