As the coronavirus epidemic continues in France, the government has decreed local containment in 19 départements. However, the list could well grow longer. So which departments will be confined next? Here's what the latest figures show.

As thecoronavirus epidemic continues in France, the country is waging a battle on two fronts: on the one hand, the acceleration of the vaccination campaign, and on the other, the spread of more transmissible variants of covid 19. So, to stem theepidemic while taking into account the psychological and economic stakes of health restrictions, the government is now opting for a hybrid, 7-day-a-week containment system that is less strict than those we had previously experienced. From now on, 19 départements will be affected by this measure. But the list could soon grow longer.

So, which departments will be confined next? The first 16 departments to be confined share one thing in common: as of March 19, 2021, their incidence rates exceeded 300 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This was also the case for Aube, Nièvre and Rhône, to which this measure was extended, although these were not the only departments to have crossed this threshold. As of Sunday March 28, 2021, 13 departments are above this threshold

It should be noted, however, that other indicators can also influence the decisions of the executive and prefects. The occupancy rate of intensive care beds and the number of hospital admissions are also factors that can lead to restrictions being tightened or extended. Depending on how the situation develops at regional level, a decision may also be taken to confine an entire region, such as Hauts-de-France or Île-de-France.
