Nobody likes it when the elevators at Abbesses metro station on line 12 break down. Located 36 meters below the Montmartre hill, this is the deepest station on the Île-de-France metro network, with an exhausting 176-step spiral staircase. But this historic record is about to be beaten, thanks to the technical achievements of the Grand Paris Express and line 15, the incredible metro line that will circle Paris from the outside.

In Val-de-Marne, the Saint-Maur-Créteil station will be 52 metres underground! The Société du Grand Paris even indicates that the station's outer walls will be cast 70 meters below ground. These newautomatic trains will therefore be the first to run so deep in the maze of tunnels of the Ile-de-France network. If you want to get off the train, you'd better hope that the 11 elevators are working properly, otherwise you'll be able to enjoy a workout on the monumental new staircase.
However, Abbesses will be able to keep its status for a few more years, as the station is only due to open in 2026. The construction site is still in the process of excavating and building the underground levels. As a reminder, line 15 will be 75 km long and will serve 36 stations, linking the three départements of the innersuburbs without passing through Paris.
