Art/Afrique, le nouvel atelier, l'expo de la Fondation Vuitton : prolongations !

The Fondation Vuitton is hosting three small exhibitions devoted to current artistic creation from South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, from mid-April to August 28, extended until September 4, 2017. On view is a selection of works from Jean Pigozzi's African art collection (1989-2009), a focus on South Africa's contemporary scene, and finally an overview of the Fondation Vuitton's African collection.

Shining the art world's spotlight on little-known regions is what the Fondation Vuitton is trying to do, in parallel with its major exhibitions. After focusing on Chinese artists, the foundation is now offering a three-part project called Art/Africa.

The first part is devoted to, as we said, Jean Pigozzi's collection ; this aesthetic businessman sought the advice of contemporary African art dealer André Magnin to put together a fine selection of artists from sub-Saharan Africa, whose work was produced between 1989 and 2009. Among the artists on show are the three stars Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keïta and Chéri Samba.

Then, the Foundation takes us a little further south with the presentation of fifteen contemporary artists from South Africa: three generations of artists are featured, from pioneers David Goldblatt, William Kentridge and Jane Alexander, to the generation of the 70s, and then to the brand-new guard born in the 80s. A cultural identity emerges across the different mediums and subjects covered.

The project concludes with an exhibition of African works from the Fondation Vuitton collection.
